Objectives :

By the end of the course, participants would be able to:
• Develop a good sense of writing tone and style to project professionalism
• Apply best structures to effectively organise their writing (such as reports and     emails)
• Identify non-standard usages of English in their writing
• Employ standard English to write effectively for corporate contexts
• Appreciate the elements of persuasion and apply them in their writing

 
     
 

Program Outline:

• The reader-centred model of communication
• Purpose and process of writing
• Employing the right tone and style
• Writing the paragraph – the basic building block
• Structuring common business writing (such as reports and emails; ‘negative’ messages; responses to complaints )
• Essential grammar and commonly misused words and phrases
• Using the Toulmin Model to craft persuasive writing

 
     
 

Targeted Audience :

For executives and business people who see the need to write more professionally and persuasively in order to effectively get their message across to decision-makers, stakeholders, clients, customers, colleagues and collaborators.

 
     
 

Trainer/Speaker Profile:

Alan Tea is the principal consultant of Decus Consulting. He is an experienced trainer, a member of the International Coach Federation and an accredited CALIPER and DISC consultant.

Alan consults for multinational corporations and government agencies, coaching and training their staff (from executives to middle/senior management) in teambuilding for improved performance, effective hiring/selection, coaching/mentoring partnerships, and the development of staff competencies (such as communication and leadership).

His expertise also extends to language education where he consults for educators and scholars from the People’s Republic of China. He has been invited to speak at seminars in Australia and the United States and locally, he is a frequent guest panellist, moderator and facilitator at public sector workshops and conferences.

Alan holds a Bachelor of Arts with Honours and a Master of Arts from the National University of Singapore (NUS), and has published in the field of linguistics. On top of his corporate training and consultancy work, he also teaches language programmes at NUS.
